Optimal Transportes de Salvador is a consortium formed by the union of six companies in the transport system of the capital of Bahia: São Cristóvão, Modelo, Unibus Bahia, União, Transol, Expresso Vitória, Triunfo and RD. The group is one of the three winning consortia in the city's public transport bidding process, which began in January 2015, for a 25-year concession contract. Currently, the consortium is responsible for serving around two million passengers per month.
After the formation of the consortium, the challenges were immense. The group of companies needed to organize itself to optimize management and meet the bidding criteria, which foresaw, as of 2015, the start of works for the optimization and better management of bus fleets and expansion of performance in urban mobility in the capital . With the process of merging the companies, the consortium planned the migration of employees, garages and equipment to a new organizational structure. The idea was to set up a structure quickly, without the need to deactivate the operations of the respective companies. One thing was certain: in the initial phase of this new organization, implementing a Data Processing Center (DPC) could require high investments and time for assembly.
Given the new scenario conditions and the short term, the consortium decided to start operations with the IT infrastructure hosted in the cloud. The initial structure would be lean, with few employees. The objective was to allow the consortium to operate without problems until a very robust structure of servers could be built. However, as employees became aware of the benefits and facilities of cloud hosting, the idea of setting up a CDP became more distant.
“We saw that it was possible to expand our processing capacity without the need to build our own CDP”, says Jorge Nery, the company's IT manager.
He also highlights numerous advantages in the service provided by Sky.One : “Most companies only offer the machine, while the company has to prepare everything, from buying and installing the operating system and database licenses, as well as the application which guarantees the functioning of the system. Sky.One , in turn, supplies the machine ready, with everything installed to start operating”.
Sky.One 's solution simplified the consortium's IT management. As cloud storage eliminates the need to implement an on-site server, the company was able to dispense with the need to manage the IT structure and have employees dedicated to activities in this area, such as database control. With that, Nery points out that the consortium now has more conditions to open a new branch. “With just one internet point, the user can start using cloud services.
It doesn't need big preparations”, says the executive. In addition, the initial investment is significantly lower compared to setting up a DPC. According to the IT manager, the company would need to spend around R$ 198,000 to set up the structure and start operating.
