The term XaaS was created to express the idea of “Something as a service” or “all as a service”. This acronym refers to a growing number of services that are provided through the Internet instead of doing it locally. XaaS becomes part of the essence of cloud computing.
The most common examples of XaaS are Software as a Service or Software as a Service (SaaS), Infrastructure as a Service or Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service or Platform as a Service (PaaS). The combined use of these three processes is called the SPI model (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS).
The expression Software as a Service (SaaS), a concept that is well known today, refers to a Proveedor de Servicios de Aplicación, the Application Service Provider (ASP), which performs the hosting of a software that can be accessed from any place. This type of application was mainly driven by the cloud computing concept which allowed, in addition to the software, to offer other types of activities as a service.
From that moment on, other “aaS” models emerged, covering areas such as communication, infrastructure, monitoring and platform. What everyone has in common is the “low demand” nature of their offers.
The low-demand model (on-demand) has good acceptance in the market because it works on a usage basis; if you use the service 2 hours a month, you only pay for 2 hours of use. As companies began to test this work flow, the use of the service began to reflect on a change in the concepts related to the service.
One of the most interesting XaaS offers is monitoring as a service, Monitoring as a Service (MaaS), which consists of maintaining the infrastructure hosted in the cloud and automatically monitoring its systems and services. An example of the MaaS model is the Sky.Saver solution, which saves infrastructure costs for those using AWS.
Communication as a Service (CaaS) is a term that uses several related telephone services. Under the general term CaaS, Voice over IP (VoIP) systems are included, also known as Voice as a Service (VaaS), Remote Automatic Call Distribution (ACD), Automatic Private Branch Exchange (Private Branch Exchange – PBX), among others.
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is also widely known thanks to Amazon's EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) service. Here, the virtual servers and their resources (CPU, memory and disk space) are dynamically assigned and scaled according to usage.
Office as a service, Desktop as a Service (DaaS), is a service in the cloud that hosts the back-end infrastructure. It is an architecture in which the DaaS provider is in charge of the tasks of data storage, support, security and updates, and the user data is copied and made available in the virtual offices when they are starting and also when they are erased.
Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) is a system by which a company that is not necessarily a provider of the cloud, replicates and hosts its physical or virtual servers to provide error switching solutions the case of a disaster. Sometimes, this provider will host your data in the cloud. It is especially useful for SMEs that do not have the infrastructure, technology or qualified personnel to implement a disaster and recovery plan on the site.
Within the advantages of the low-demand model, more specifically XaaS, the possibility is included that small and medium-sized companies can compete with larger ones. SMEs use these services on demand and can compete using a fraction of the cost that would be necessary to invest in the purchase of hardware, software and experienced personnel to configure and maintain these services.
Another advantage is the ease of acquiring a complete framework of services and being able to create a completely virtual company. Where is your company located? In all parts.
All as a service is a good idea and it is a concept that does not fall only to theory. XaaS can help in different types of businesses and requires a low initial investment and a reduced start-up time. All with a good planning and a well-defined architecture at the service of the operational strategy of the companies.
