Challenges with the Cloud
Rossi had already been integrated into the cloud infrastructure for several years. However, the high cost, due to billing being in dollars, was a major factor in deciding whether to continue using it.
After three migrations to different cloud providers, the company was able, for the first time, to carry out a seamless system change, in conjunction with its partner Skyone. Another extremely important point for the company's work efficiency is that, with everything in the cloud, the infrastructure is already in place. With the opening of new branches, this is no longer an issue to be addressed.
"If I need to start a new branch or a new project, I already have the entire core system in the cloud, and I don't need to worry about any local infrastructure," explains Eduardo Araújo, Information Technology Manager at Rossi. "With this, we also have a very significant reduction in operational costs."
However, another point that created difficulties was the customer service provided:
We were using another public cloud with a different partner where we had service issues and high costs. Because of this, we first needed to migrate the key from the old partner with Skyone and then migrate to the Google cloud. Comments Eduardo Pereira de Araújo – Information Technology Manager at Rossi
A few years ago, the company started working with the ECC component in the EHP 8 version, using modules such as FI (financial accounting), CO (controlling), MM (materials management), and TRM (treasury and risk management). However, the high dollar exchange rate in 2020 made the costs with the cloud provider they were using at the time excessively high. The team was also dissatisfied with the service offered, which led them to seek a new provider and a partner to support them with the migration.
For the provider, the primary goal was to have a good cost with high availability and scalability. For the partner, the requirements were to perform the migration in a short period of time (since the contract with the other service was coming to an end) and knowledge about the previous provider to ensure the success of the operation. After a period of searching, Google Cloud and Skyone were chosen for this undertaking.
Among the cloud options we researched, Google Cloud offered us the best financial terms and a solution that truly met our needs. And among the various partners we contacted, Skyone presented us with the best work planning and service. Eduardo Araújo, Information Technology Manager at Rossi Residencial
Solution
The company is undergoing a major organizational restructuring, and expenses are included in this process. Therefore, it's necessary to consider the entire spectrum to understand what is worth investing in and what the best approach is. Skyone is a strategic partner that allows the company to have the best service with the best cost-benefit ratio through its Skyone Autosky system.
With a tight deadline for the migration, there wouldn't be time to install the applications from scratch on Google Cloud. Therefore, Rossi requested that the Skyone team perform a complete mirroring of the previous architecture, that is, migrate the virtual machines from their four SAP environments and four servers for other applications directly to Google Cloud.
So, after a detailed mapping of the source structure in conjunction with Rossi, the partner was able to plan the migration in one month.
"When you do a preliminary mapping and, consequently, become familiar with the client's environment, you can prepare the migration destination in a way that already has all the integrations and their respective accesses working," comments Ricardo Nunes, Solutions Specialist at Skyone.
The tool chosen for transferring the environments was Migrate for Compute Engine (formerly called Velostrata), which speeds up, simplifies, and reduces risks for migrating applications to Google Cloud. Skyone selected a professional specializing in this solution to lead the operation, which also had the support of Google Cloud experts to make the necessary adjustments.
The process took only one month to complete. The environments were successfully migrated with zero impact on operations, an unprecedented achievement for the company. Now, the SAP environments are running on a new infrastructure comprised of Compute Engine , a service that allows the creation and execution of virtual machines, and Cloud Storage , for data storage.
This is the first time, after three previous migrations to private and public clouds, that our users felt no impact and we had no system interruptions. It was a collaborative project that was very successful. Eduardo Araújo, Information Technology Manager at Rossi Residencial.
Flexibility for any business need with Cloud for SAP
Since the migration, Rossi has not faced any further system downtime, much less user requests or related incidents. High performance has been maintained even with the resizing of virtual machines carried out by the team. Moreover, the flexibility to increase or decrease resources according to the company's demands has proven fundamental. "Rossi is in a sector that has elasticity. During a year, we might have two or three projects, or ten. So it's important to have this resource in the cloud," says Araújo.
Since the company's operations don't run 24/7, another benefit of the change was the ability to schedule when the servers are turned on and off, generating savings for the company. In addition to these factors, billing for services in Brazilian reais, with the dollar fixed, led to a 50% reduction in monthly costs compared to the previous provider.
The ease of integration between Google Cloud and SAP tools was a pleasant surprise for the team.
We were concerned that there might be some incompatibility; we didn't know if we would be able to work in the same way. And today we are able to work even better than before, comments the IT manager. For Skyone, the good adaptation between the solutions becomes noticeable soon after the migration.
Google Cloud solutions address all phases of SAP migration, but we've noticed that day-to-day operations become even more integrated after migration. Ricardo Nunes, Solutions Specialist at Skyone
The stability and security of the cloud have brought more convenience to the daily lives of IT teams. It's no longer necessary to travel to the office outside of business hours to perform updates or repairs. Nowadays, employees can work remotely with peace of mind and maintain business continuity throughout the country.
With more time to focus on the company's needs instead of operational issues, the team is now studying the adoption of new Google Cloud tools. Rossi's next challenge is to further strengthen its sales operations and customer service through the use of data analytics and artificial intelligence solutions, leveraging the company's extensive database.
