Soter Engineering: Cloud Migration and the End of On-Premise

Soter Engenharia experienced several issues with its physical infrastructure. After a few incidents, they migrated to Skyone Autosky and haven't had any problems since! Now, in addition to cloud application security, they also use Skyone's Cybersecurity platform to ensure the entire ecosystem is protected.

About Soter Engineering

Throughout its more than 55 years of operation in the Niterói construction market, Soter has accumulated over 90 incorporated projects, 100% of which were delivered on time, more than 6,500 units sold, and currently has over R$1.5 billion in land bank.

Following its firm commitment to growth, combining tradition and innovation, the company is investing more and more in technology, launching differentiated, larger, and more modern products.

Challenges

Because it is an essentially traditional segment, civil construction companies do not typically have a technological profile. Following this pattern, until then, all of Soter's data was stored within the company itself and maintained on-premise , limiting work, creating risks, and jeopardizing information security.

With the arrival of eSocial and the need to send files on time, the company went through a difficult time when it lost power on the day of the eSocial submission, which was an initial warning sign that they needed a more reliable environment. Later, they had another issue with their data processing center (CPD), which suffered damage from third parties, leading to the conclusion that having only the physical infrastructure is a major problem for companies and the security of their data.

This series of setbacks made them realize that, just as they always sought improvement in their work in civil engineering, they needed to keep their work structure updated so that nothing could hinder progress. Furthermore, the company needed to focus on its business without having to worry about system instability and the possibility of a malfunction halting all company progress.

Solution

Starting in 2018, there was a shift in focus towards niche businesses and the search for partners with expertise in their specific areas. This is how Soter Engenharia joined Skyone to assist in its IT area, providing security and organization to ensure its operations remained always online.

It was during this transition that I found Skyone, a great partner of ours in terms of our IT arm, providing us with the security of knowing that our servers will be well protected, in the correct location, and that our data is more secure than it was when it was stored here, as Liliane Maltez Garcia – IT Manager at Soter – explains.

In 2019, the company partnered with Skyone, migrating its data to the cloud with Skyone Autosky. The process began in August and was completed in October, and less than 6 months after the migration, the COVID-19 pandemic began and lockdown was necessary. At this point, they realized that the decision couldn't have been more right, allowing the company to continue working from home without suffering any impact, even with the office closed for months.

Results

The cloud offered a new world of possibilities for the company. Besides streamlining work and allowing files and data to be accessed from anywhere, whenever needed, other processes were implemented. For example, a reduction in file printing, digital signatures, and the use of online systems without the need for constant system updates on each machine where they were installed, contributing to smoother workflow. The result was agility, speed, and ease in maintaining work. Currently, the focus is on continuously improving performance, as Liliane explains:

The move to Skyone was one of the first turning points [for digital transformation] because IT work stopped being manual and now we have your work supporting us. Today, my legacy systems are in the cloud, people can use the system in the cloud, which was previously installed on machines

With the increase in the number of employees, the company migrated its environment to Oracle Brazil, seeking even greater performance and the possibility for everyone to use the cloud without problems with slowness or delays. The migration was done in May and the result was more than satisfactory, mainly due to the performance of the Skyone technical team, which completed the entire process in a few hours, preventing the company from having to stop its work for days to organize everything on the company's 7 servers, which would have required at least 1 week per server.

"When we started working with you, the environment was in the US, and in a meeting, one of Skyone's technicians suggested that we migrate to Oracle Brazil to improve latency. We migrated in May, and it was an excellent performance on your part; we only had downtime of 3 hours, between shutting down the old environment and validating the new one—it was super fast," explained Liliane.

Furthermore, the company managed to reduce network latency from 132 ms to 9 ms, completing a key area of focus. Now, they are continuing to upgrade operating systems, server designs, etc.

Regarding the Skyone team and their collaborative work, Lili highlights the complementary and supportive relationship she has with her team whenever needed:

They are super attentive and fast. I open a ticket and, in a maximum of 1 hour, the issue is resolved. If I need to ask questions, I contact the team or my support team.
